End Clutch Repair

It has been really hard to decifer what you need to do to modify these transmissions. Here is what I *THINK* needs to be modified to handle more power and extend transmission life:

1. Replace the OD friction material with the higher friction ones. The frictions wear out and the steel rings rarely show any wear if the transmission fluid is good. (this replaces the worn ones and gives them better grip.)

2. Replace the seals in the End Clutch and any other parts that show wear. (maintains fluid pressure to the end clutch and replaces worn parts)

3. Install a Translab TL-175-HP shift kit. (increases fluid pressure and quickens the shifts to keep the clutches from slipping. This reduces wear, heat and gives you firmer shifts.)

4. Replace the Valve Body solenoid seals (they harden and leak pressure)

5. Replace the Torque Converter seal (just reduces the chances of a transmission fluid leak)

So it is all about increasing the pressure and reducing pressure loss. The rest of the maintenance is just to get the transmission back up to par. Similar to a 5-speed, you are increasing the clamping force on the friction materials to handle the extra power. All of this is also done to reduce heat and extend the life of the transmission fluid. If the fluid breaks down, wear inside the transmission is greatly accelerated.

Don't forget to change the transmission fluid and filter on the recommended maintenance intervals. The fluid should never be any color other than red. Nice bright red. OEM fluid seems to do a good job. Run Synthetic ATF if you want a little more protection from breakdown. Just keep in mind that the synthetics will need some friction modifier mixed in before they match the lubrication and friction qualities of the OEM stuff. The black bottle Lubeguard brand friction modifier is great stuff.

Install the largest transmission cooler that you can fit and your transmission will live a happy life.

MORE POWER

If the increased clamping force on the friction materials is not enough, you will need to dig inside of the transmission. Replace the bands with higher friction ones.

The Valve Body can also be adjusted more to increase the band clamping force and line pressure a little more. Best to talk to a professional about the limitations here.

This would also be a good time to look into a stronger/higher stall torque converter. This I would recommend talking directly to a transmission specialist about. The best torque converter for your car is very dependant on the amount of power your car has and the cars intended purpose (all out drag or daily driver)
